Liquid Highlighter on Mature Skin: Where to Put It

Why skin looks flat now
Younger skin bounces light. With age the surface becomes less even, cell turnover slows, and the skin reflects less and absorbs more. That is the actual mechanism behind "dull," and it is why matte finishes that once looked polished now look tired.

Where to place it, and where not to
Yes:
- Top of the cheekbone, high and toward the temple — a short sweep, not a stripe down to the nose.

- Centre of the chin and a touch on the brow bone.
No:
- Not on the crease of a hooded or crepey lid — shimmer settles into texture and emphasises it.
- Not down the full length of the nose if you have visible pores there.
- Not on active breakouts, which it makes more three-dimensional.
- Not across the whole cheek. Highlighter is punctuation, not a layer.
Three ways to use it beyond the obvious
- Mixed into foundation. A drop or two turns a flat base luminous across the whole face without any visible shimmer. This is the most useful application for mature skin by some distance.
- Over moisturiser, under base, for a glow that comes from underneath rather than sitting on top.
- On the high points only, after base, pressed with a fingertip. Press, never swipe — swiping drags product off the point you were aiming at.
Finish matters more than shade
Look for a fine, diffused shimmer rather than visible glitter particles. Large reflective particles catch on texture and read as sparkle; finely milled ones read as skin. If you can see individual flecks in the bottle, it will emphasise every line it lands in.
On shade: champagne and soft gold flatter warm and olive tones, pearl and soft pink suit cool tones. Deeper skin tones generally need a warmer, richer bronze or copper — pale pearl reads ashy.
The bit that matters for reactive skin
Highlighter goes on the upper cheek and inner eye corner, which means it migrates toward the eye through the day.
