Lip Crayon vs Lipstick and Liner: One Product or Two?

A hydrating lip crayon does the job of a liner and a lipstick in one step, and on lips that have lost definition it often does it better. The reason is mechanical: a crayon lays down colour and edge in the same pass, so there is no seam between two products for colour to bleed through.

Why lipstick starts bleeding after 40

The vermilion border — the crisp ridge between lip and skin — softens as collagen declines. That ridge is what used to hold colour in. Once it blurs, any product with slip travels into the fine vertical lines above the lip.

Three things accelerate it: sun exposure on the upper lip, which is angled to catch a lot of UV and almost never gets SPF; smoking; and the general volume loss of the upper lip that starts earlier and shows more than the lower.

When a crayon is the better choice

• Very specific shade matching, since crayon ranges are usually narrower.

How to apply a crayon on mature lips

1. Balm first, wait ten minutes, blot. Do not exfoliate — lip tissue is three to five cells thick and scrubbing causes the flaking it claims to fix.
2. Outline first, then fill, using the flat of the tip rather than the point.
3. Line on or just inside the border, never outside. Overdrawing a soft border reads as overdrawn.
4. Blot and reapply rather than one thick layer. Thick layers migrate.
5. A whisper of powder on the skin just outside the lip line, pressed not swept, if you are prone to feathering.
6. Slightly lighter at the centre of the lower lip creates the appearance of fullness.

The ingredient check that matters most on lips
