The Three-Product Routine for People Who React to Everything
If everything stings, the answer is not a gentler tenth product. It is three products for a month. You cannot identify a trigger inside a nine-step routine, and a barrier that is already compromised does not recover while you keep testing new things on it.
Written by Dr. Liia Ramachandra, PharmD, PhD — pharmacist, formulator and founder of EpiLynx.
The three products, and nothing else
- A gentle, non-foaming cleanser. No sulfates, no acids hidden in the formula, no fragrance. Lukewarm water only.
- A fragrance-free moisturiser, applied to damp skin twice daily.
- A mineral SPF every morning.
That is the entire routine. No serum, no toner, no acid, no retinoid, no vitamin C, no oil, no mask, no exfoliant — and no makeup for the first fortnight if you can manage it. If you want it as one decision rather than three, our Complete Glow Ritual 3-Step Set is built as exactly this.
Why this works when adding products does not
Two things are happening when skin "reacts to everything."
A depleted barrier. Once the lipid layer is thinned — usually by over-exfoliation, too many actives, foaming cleansers or hot water — irritants reach living tissue that they previously never touched. At that point almost anything stings, including products that are objectively gentle. That is not an allergy; it is permeability.
Too many variables. With nine products you have nine suspects and no way to isolate one. Reducing to three does not just calm the skin, it makes the problem legible.
Barrier repair takes about four weeks. It will feel like doing nothing, and the doing-nothing is the treatment.
Reintroducing, without undoing it
- Wait until nothing stings — a full four weeks, not two.
- Add one product, and only one.
- Patch test first: inner forearm, five consecutive days.
- Then two weeks on the face before adding anything else.
- At half the frequency you used before. A retinoid that was nightly becomes weekly.
- Write it down. Product name, INCI list, start date, what happened. You will not remember, and the list is what identifies the pattern.
Adding one product every two weeks feels absurdly slow. It is also the only method that produces an answer.
When it is allergy rather than a damaged barrier
The distinction matters because the treatment differs entirely:
- Barrier problem: immediate stinging or burning, confined to where you applied, affects most products, improves with simplification.
- Contact allergy: delayed 24 to 72 hours, intensely itchy rather than stinging, may spread beyond the application area, and gets progressively worse with each exposure.
If it looks like the second, simplification will not solve it — you need patch testing to get a name for the molecule. Without a name you cannot avoid it, because the same allergen appears across dozens of unrelated products under synonyms you would not recognise.
The things people forget to remove
Facial dermatitis is frequently caused by something that never touched the face directly:
- Shampoo and conditioner running down your face in the shower
- Laundry detergent and fabric softener on your pillowcase — eight hours a night against your skin
- Hand soap, then hands on face
- A partner's aftershave or hair product
- Toothpaste, particularly around the mouth and chin
What I actually reach for
- Complete Glow Ritual 3-Step Set — the whole routine, one ingredient list to check.
- Gentle Hydrating Facial Cleanser — non-foaming, no sulfates, no acids.
- Miracle Face Cream — if you are dry as well as reactive.
- SPF 50 Mineral Moisturizer — mineral filters, which do not sting compromised skin the way chemical ones can.
Every formula publishes a full INCI list and excludes our 14 named allergens — which is what makes a reaction traceable rather than a mystery. Shipping is free over $39, and EPILYNXGLOW25 takes 25% off.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if every product stings? Cut to three — gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturiser, mineral SPF — for four weeks. Adding a gentler tenth product does not fix a permeable barrier.
How long does barrier repair take? About four weeks of consistency. Some people need eight. It will feel like doing nothing.
How do I know if it is allergy instead? Allergy is delayed 24 to 72 hours, intensely itchy rather than stinging, may spread, and worsens with each exposure. That needs patch testing.
How slowly should I reintroduce products? One every two weeks, patch tested first, at half your previous frequency. Faster than that and you cannot attribute a reaction.
Could something other than skincare be causing it? Frequently. Shampoo, laundry detergent on your pillowcase, hand soap and toothpaste are all common causes of facial dermatitis.
