Matte Lipstick Without the Desert Effect

Traditional matte lipstick is drying by design — the finish comes from high pigment load, film formers and volatile solvents that evaporate and leave a flat, tight layer behind. That is fine on 25-year-old lips. On lips that have no oil glands and are thinning, it is a problem you feel by lunchtime.

Why matte dries and gloss slips

Lips have no sebaceous glands at all and a stratum corneum three to five cells thick, against roughly sixteen on your cheek. They cannot moisturise themselves and they cannot hold water. Whatever you put on them is doing all the work.

A classic matte formula removes the emollient content that would normally cushion that — so the colour lasts, and the lip underneath gets progressively drier, flakier and more prone to settling into vertical lines. Meanwhile high-shine gloss slips straight into those same lines and travels.

The answer is neither extreme. A matte finish built on a hydrating base gives you the wear without the desert — which is what our Vegan Matte Lipstick was formulated for.

How to wear matte on dry or mature lips

1. Do not exfoliate first. Scrubbing tissue this thin causes the flaking it claims to fix. Instead, apply balm and leave it for ten minutes, then blot.
2. Line the whole lip, not just the outline, in your natural tone. It gives colour something to grip and creates a physical barrier at the edge.
3. Blot and reapply rather than applying one thick layer. Thick layers migrate into lines.
4. Line on or just inside the border. Overdrawing a softened vermilion border reads as overdrawn.
5. Mid-tone shades are kindest. Very dark colours emphasise volume loss; very pale ones flatten the lip.
6. Blue-toned reds and pinks also make teeth look whiter, which is a genuine side benefit after 40.

The ingredients that make lips worse

• Menthol, camphor, phenol. The tingle is irritation. Irritated lips stay irritated.
• Plumping agents — capsaicin, ginger, cinnamon. They work by causing controlled inflammation.
• Salicylic acid in "exfoliating" lip products.
• Flavour and fragrance. Cinnamon, peppermint and citrus flavours are among the most common causes of lip dermatitis.
• Carmine — the red pigment in most lipsticks, made from cochineal insects. Allergenic and not vegan.
• Lanolin — a genuine allergen for a meaningful minority.
