Chin Hairs After 40: The Gentlest Way to Remove Them

The gentlest option for chin and lip hair after 40 is a trimmer that cuts at the surface — no wax, no chemicals, no pulling. On skin that is thinner and slower to heal than it used to be, and often on a retinoid, that matters more than how long the result lasts.

Written by Dr. Liia Ramachandra, PharmD, PhD — pharmacist, formulator and founder of EpiLynx.

Why they appear now

Through your fertile years oestrogen dominates. At menopause oestrogen falls sharply while androgen production declines much more slowly, so the ratio shifts. Androgens convert fine vellus hair into coarse pigmented hair on the chin, upper lip and jawline. Your testosterone has not risen — the balance has changed.

Nobody warns women this is coming, which is why most assume it is only happening to them. It is one of the most common physical changes of menopause.

The practical question is what you remove it with, and on this skin the answer is narrower than it used to be. Our Lipstick-Shaped Painless Facial Hair Remover has a gold-plated head rather than bare nickel alloy — nickel being the most common contact allergen there is — and it is the only method on this page that is safe to use while you are on a retinoid.

The methods, ranked for mature skin

Best suited

Electric trimmers and painless removers. Nothing is pulled from the follicle, no chemicals touch the skin, no stratum corneum is removed. Lasts three to seven days. Safe alongside retinoids and acids.

Tweezing, for a handful of individual hairs. Precise and cheap, but impractical beyond a few and repeated tweezing can cause ingrowns and pigmentation.

Use with care

Threading. No chemicals, which is a genuine advantage — but it is mechanical trauma, and on thinner skin it causes more redness and occasional bruising than it once did.

Laser and IPL. Effective on dark hair, but grey and white hairs contain no melanin, so laser cannot target them at all. This is why so many women start laser at exactly the point it stops working. Electrolysis is the only permanent method that works regardless of hair colour.

Generally avoid

Waxing. Removes stratum corneum along with the hair. On thinning skin or on any retinoid, it can lift skin rather than just hair.

Depilatory creams. Thioglycolate at around pH 12 against facial skin that sits near pH 5. Chemical burns are common and they are almost always heavily fragranced.

Two myths worth killing

Trimming does not make hair grow back thicker or darker. It cuts the hair at its widest point and removes the tapered tip, so regrowth feels blunt. The follicle is untouched. This myth stops a lot of women using the gentlest method available.

Plucking one hair does not cause three to grow. More appear because the hormonal shift is ongoing, not because you tweezed.

Aftercare that prevents pigmentation

  1. Nothing active for 24 hours — no retinoid, no acids, no vitamin C.
  2. A fragrance-free moisturiser immediately after, on cool skin — our Miracle Face Cream is the one I use.
  3. SPF the next morning without fail. Freshly de-haired skin pigments easily, and post-inflammatory marks fade more slowly after 50.
  4. If redness lasts beyond 48 hours, the method is wrong for your skin. Change it rather than pushing through.

When to see a doctor

Gradual increase around menopause is expected. Rapid onset over weeks, onset well before 40, or facial hair alongside a deepening voice, male-pattern scalp loss, new acne or increased muscle bulk should be investigated for an androgen-secreting cause. Topical eflornithine and spironolactone are prescription options worth raising if removal alone is not enough.

What I actually reach for

All fragrance-free, gluten-free and free of our 14 excluded allergens. Shipping is free over $39, and EPILYNXGLOW25 takes 25% off.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gentlest way to remove chin hair after 40? A surface trimmer. Nothing is pulled from the follicle and no skin is removed, which matters on thinner, slower-healing skin.

Will laser work on grey chin hairs? No. Laser targets melanin and grey hair has none. Electrolysis is the only permanent method that works on any colour.

Can I wax my chin if I use retinol? No. Retinoids loosen surface cell adhesion and waxing can lift skin. Use a trimmer instead.

Does trimming make hair grow back coarser? No. The blunt tip feels coarser, but the follicle and the hair are unchanged.

When should I see a doctor? Rapid onset over weeks, onset before 40, or facial hair with a deepening voice, scalp hair loss or new acne.
