As the Memorial Day is coming up, it got me thinking about its meaning..
As the Wikipedia states:
Memorial Day (or less commonly called Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering and honoring people who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of the summer vacation season in the United States. While Labor Day marks its end on the first Monday of September.
Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day, particularly to honor those who died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.
As a ‘Brand-New” American now, it has a lot of meaning for me when I and everyone honor all the military personnel that served and died to protect us.
However, as the ‘Citizen of the World”, it has a very deep meaning to me as well.
Being born in Russia and being Jewish, WWII is ingrained in me due to my families history and due to the impact it had on the whole world. May 9 was the day of liberation. However May 8 was the day of mourning for all the fallen/killed/lost. It was such a big emotional day that we have honored since my childhood.
I think of many wars and the brave men and women who defended their countries and loved ones. And I would like to honor all of them during this Memorial weekend.
Thank you for your service.
